Character Concept - Anarx

I'm working on a story, and the first thing I did was mentally flesh out a few dozen characters. One thing I wanted to do was make a riff on the "silent protagonist" in the story. While not a main character, the character is important to the plot so that that riff will work without appearing fishy or tedious.

The piece itself is just a sketch with very basic shading, because I have a few dozen I want to make before I continue on with the story; and I have very little free time to draw in the first place.

Anarx was a scientist who had been captured by a criminal organization, the Hematites, over a decade ago. Looking to steal his research, his lack of cooperation was responded to with torture. He lost his tongue and two fingers to this treatment before he was able to escape. Upon escaping, the Hematite leader retaliated by destroying Anarx's labs, notes, home, and family.


The decade or so after escaping, Anarx has ostracized himself from society. Able to speak, but unwilling to embarrass himself in front of others, he has found that others are only a hinderance. He hides in the mountains and forests, keeping track of the dreaded Hematites. He knows enough of their plans in order to raid less defended bases as a one man army; but he lacks the power to remove the Hematites permanently.

Not wanting to let others go through his tragedy, he intervenes most when civilians are at the receiving end of the Hematites evil plans. In the meantime, he wanders, grows, and waits.

However, an unfortunate symptom of his interference is that the Hematites are growing more and more powerful before exploiting others. There is only so much power one organization can have, before they become an army...
